Introduction
This unit uses specific location studies to illustrate broader geographical themes. Traditional geographical methods support these explorations of contemporary issues, challenges and conflicts from the point of view of the people involved. Programme 1 Scotland: Sustainable energy Sustainable approaches to meeting our future energy needs. This programme looks at alternative energy sources, including wind and solar power, and considers the costs and benefits of their development: to local people as well as to the environment. Programme 2 Snowdonia: The future of upland farmers The future of upland farmers and their communities. Is hill farming sustainable in the face of modern techniques and tourism? What are the options for the next generation of farmers? These are some of the questions explored in this programme. Programme 3 Yorkshire: Limestone landscapes How limestone underpins the landscape and human geography of the Dales. This programme examines the processes that have shaped the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, and looks at the impact of tourism and commercial exploitation. Can these activities be sustained without ruining the natural beauty which people come to enjoy?
