Amnesty International
Email: idea@amnesty.org

Amnesty International is a worldwide voluntary movement working to prevent some of the gravest violations by governments of people's fundamental human rights. Its one million members campaign to:

  • Free all prisoners of conscience. These are people detained anywhere for their beliefs or because of their ethnic origin, sex, colour or language who have not used or advocated violence.
  • Ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners.
  • Abolish the death penalty, torture, and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of prisoners.
  • End extrajudicial executions and 'disappearances'.

Amnesty International also opposes abuses by opposition groups, hostage-taking, torture and killings of prisoners, and other arbitrary killings.

Amnesty International, recognising that human rights are universal and interdependent, works to promote all the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards, through human rights education programmes and campaigning for ratification of human rights treaties.

Amnesty International is impartial. It is independent of any government, political persuasion or religious creed. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the protection of the human rights involved in each case, regardless of the ideology of the government or opposition forces or of the beliefs of the individual.

Amnesty International conducts research on human rights abuse throughout the world. It supports promotion of human rights awareness, and spreading information about the rights people possess. Amnesty International produces many materials about human rights. In the United Kingdom, over 500 Amnesty Youth Action Groups have been set up in schools, and many younger students participate in the organisation's Junior Urgent Action Network.
