Introduction

Welcome to Handmade, a 10-part art and craft series for 5—14 year olds.

The series looks at 10 craftspeople at work. Each works in a different medium (such as clay, wood, ice, glass or paper) to produce a finished article.

These Net Notes provide a short biography of each craftsperson, as well information about their techniques and the inspiration for their work.

Linked to each programme are simple craft ideas for pupils. These can be adapted for a variety of age groups and situations.

A short description relates each craft to its social, historical and cultural context, as well as showing the development of materials and technologies over time. A range of possible learning outcomes are suggested, as are links to curriculum areas.

Handmade provides an excellent introduction to the work of a wonderful variety of craftspeople. Pupils can develop their understanding of craft work and apply it to their own investigating and making skills.
