This programme raises awareness of the impact of AIDS on
people's lives as it spreads throughout the world. It explains what
AIDS is, and describes the different ways in which people can
become infected with the HIV virus (which causes the condition). It
then looks at the impact of HIV and AIDS in Kenya, a developing
country, and the UK.
A key message emerging from the programme is that informed and
open discussion about AIDS - and how to prevent it - is essential
for protecting the health of future generations worldwide. It is
also essential that people learn to deal compassionately with those
affected by HIV, or suffering from AIDS. There is still no known
cure.
Teachers should familiarise themselves with any guidelines
relating to sex education and education about AIDS that apply in
their school. They also need to be aware that there may be someone
in their class who is HIV positive or has AIDS, or who has
relatives and friends who are affected.
