Curriculum Relevance

Shakespeare's Henry V is a prescribed text for study at key stage 3. Teachers who are using this text will find the approaches adopted here useful as an entry point into the study of the themes of leadership and transformation.

From September 2001, the pedagogy and approaches espoused by the key stage 3 Framework for Literacy are bolted on to the existing national curriculum requirements for English. The stated aim of the Framework is to enable all pupils to develop sophisticated literacy skills. By the end of Year 9, each pupil should be a shrewd and fluent independent reader, a confident writer and an effective speaker and listener. Although speaking and listening, and reading, are involved in all of the activities connected to these programmes, the main emphasis is on writing. The chart below shows one way of mapping the aims and objectives for writing in Year 8 onto the activities. The aims are not exclusive but tagging each activity with a specific focus may be helpful for teachers who are concerned with the preparation of detailed lesson plans and curriculum coverage. Working in this way, and modifying the activities to suit the abilities represented in the class, it would be possible to visit all of the writing objectives over a half term.

This curriculum relevance grid shows how Writing for Kicks relates to the curriculum. The grid is a downloadable Word document.
