In Wales, pupils should be given opportunities to read works by Welsh authors writing in English and those works that have a Welsh setting or a special relevance to Wales.

In other parts of the UK, pupils should have opportunities to read texts from other cultures and traditions that represent their distinctive voices and forms, and offer varied perspectives and subject matter.

Pupils should have the opportunity to read a variety of genres: plays, novels and short stories, poetry and non-literary texts such as autobiographies and travel writing; and have the opportunity to analyse and evaluate a range of media and moving-image texts such as film, television, newspapers and ICT sources.

Pupils should have the opportunity to respond intellectually and imaginatively to different texts and understand and evaluate how writers use linguistic and structural devices.

Pupils should have the opportunity to evaluate persuasive techniques, arguments and how information is presented, and to select and collate material from a range of sources.
