Curriculum Relevance

Within the PSHE non-statutory guidelines for Key Stage 4, the programme has relevance to two of the three ‘knowledge, skills and understanding’ headings: pupils should be taught to ‘develop confidence and responsibility and make the most of their abilities’ and to ‘develop good relationships and respect the differences between people’.

Within the statutory citizenship curriculum for Key Stage 4, the programme has relevance to knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens for example, pupils should be taught about ‘different identities and the need for mutual understanding’.

Skills of enquiry and communication could be developed by researching into social issues for deaf people or other disadvantaged groups, and by expressing a personal opinion about such issues. The programme could be used to develop skills of participation and responsible action where pupils are helped to use their imagination to consider the experiences of deaf people (and others in situations unlike their own).
