Case Study 1: Chocks Away!

Assignment: Predictable and unpredictable events in the RAF
Key Skills: Communication and IT Daniel, fifteen, wants to be a pilot. Failing that, an engineer. He is currently studying for eight GCSEs and a GNVQ Part One as part of the college’s commitment to vocational education. (Part One consists of the first three units of an Intermediate Level course.) Whilst on work placement at an RAF base, Daniel interviews a pilot and an engineer to collect data for his GNVQ assignment on predictable and unpredictable events in the workplace. What he’s most excited about, however, is the chance to prepare for flight, checking levels and so on, and helping the pilot in and out of his gear. Case Study 2: A Bed for the Night

Key Skills: Communication, Numeracy and IT Maniza is making a study of a new business in the making – the conversion of a derelict building into a youth hostel for young independent travellers. The young entrepreneur Sion Llywelyn pulls together market research, collateral, loans and business plans to make it all possible. Whilst the builders move in, Maniza sees how hard work can turn a good idea into reality. Case Study 3: Outward Bound for Adventure

Assignment: Planning an Outward Bound Course
Key Skills: Communication Keiron goes to a Welsh speaking school in Cardiff. For his first assignment Keiron identified a gap in the market – no lesson planners in Welsh. So he and his team put one together and are selling them at a profit of £3 per book to the staff at their school. Their next assignment is to plan and execute an outward bound residential course at the ‘Storey Arms’ Centre in the Brecon Beacons as a team-building exercise. At the end we see them as they walk towards the minibus at the end of the course.
