The following questions were included in the 1999 exam paper for English Literature (Foundation):

Hearts and Partners

In your answer to Question 28 or Question 29 you must refer to pre-twentieth-century and to twentieth-century poetry.

Either

What have you found serious and what have you found amusing in the Hearts and Partners poems?

Compare three or four poems.

You should write about:

  • what you have found to be serious
  • what you have found to be amusing
  • how the poets write about these things

Or

Compare three or four poems from Hearts and Partners, showing how different poets show the negative and positive aspects of relationships.

You should write about:

  • postive experiences and attitudes
  • negative experiences and attitudes
  • different writers’ ways of presenting relationships
