Bangladesh: Living with flooding

Programme Outline

Living with flooding focuses on the effects of cyclones on the people living on the coast of Bangladesh. Cyclones are a constant threat, and although their formation can be detected, their path towards Bangladesh and potential destructiveness are difficult to predict.

Section 1 – April 29th, 1991
Two families recall what happened to them when the cyclone hit their island off the coast of Bangladesh. Also describes how cyclones form and how they can be detected.

Section 2 – After the storm
Focuses on how the two families began to rebuild their lives after the cyclone had subsided.

Section 3 – Why stay?
Explores some of the reasons why people still live in the area despite the constant threat of further cyclones.

Section 4 – Minimising the risks
Looks at what has happened since 1991 to protect people and property from the effects of another cyclone.
