The Changing City: London

Programme Outline

The programme begins by contrasting the different faces of London – some familiar, others less so – and exploring the influence of landforms such as meanders on the growth of London. Then, through the eyes of people who live in Coin Street – a South Bank riverside community – it considers inner city land use changes and their effects on the lives of the local population.

The programme examines the following geographical ideas:
a) landforms associated with rivers and their channels play a role in how people use the river and its banks;
b) distinctive patterns of land use develop in urban areas;
c) the use of the land in urban areas changes over time;
d) conflicts can arise over the use of the land in inner city areas.
