Vietnam: Tourism Take-Off

Activities

Activity 1

Not a Tiger

Why is Vietnam so different from South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan? Its people — and once its army — had a reputation for vigour, determination and a strong will to succeed.

A. Look at the Background Information in the Net Notes on Vietnam and other countries in the series such as South Korea and Singapore. Make two lists:

a) Vietnam’s attractions and its assets for economic prosperity.

b) Factors which hinder progress in Vietnam.

You will find further information at this website:

B. Suggest what the crucial factors are, and what Vietnam may have to do if it wants to become prosperous.

Activity 2

Rural Life in Vietnam

Find answers to these questions:

  • What percentage of Vietnamese people live in rural areas?
  • How does this compare with other South-East Asian countries?
  • What conditions encourage large numbers of people to leave the countryside to go and live in towns?
  • Are these conditions found in Vietnam, or likely to be very soon?

Imagine you work for a rural development agency whose task it is to prevent too many people from leaving the countryside in Vietnam. Use the video and Net Notes to produce a leaflet showing why rural life is the best choice. Refer to the experience of other countries (such as Thailand) if this helps.

Activity 3

Tourist Potential

Look at the website:

  1. Why is Vietnam trying to expand its tourist industry?
  2. What has it got to offer tourists?
  3. What other places can tourists easily visit in South-East Asia? How do the tourist facilities of these places compare with those of Vietnam?
  4. If you were Director of Tourism for Vietnam, how would you try to promote the tourist industry?
