Tamanna, Ayman and Halla Tend an Allotment

Programme Outline

Even in the crowded streets of the city, there are patches of green space. Tamanna, Ayman and Halla get ready to visit their allotment. They put on their wellies and load the wheelbarrow with tools – a fork, a spade, a rake and a watering can.

It is late summer on the allotment. The onions have run to seed and their globular seed heads are nodding in the breeze. The children get to work. Thirsty plants need to be watered and weeds need to be grubbed up. It's time to dig up the potatoes and harvest the peas. Time, too, to plant leeks, green beans and cabbage – and to dream about next year's crop.

When the work is done, everyone's hungry. The children open the long pea pods to get at plump, fresh peas. They cut, wash and shred lettuce, ready for a salad. And there are sweet things from the allotment too, raspberries, currants and gooseberries.

They settle down with their dad for a picnic, enjoying the sunshine and the tasty food they have grown for themselves.
