Force and Motion

Answers to Activity Sheet 1

Programme Questions

Speed

  1. Average speed is the distance travelled divided by the time taken.
  2. A light gate is a device which sends a beam of light from an emitter to a detector. When the beam is broken and does not reach the detector a signal is sent which can be used to start or stop another device.
  3. If a light gate is positioned at each point so that the first starts a timer when the beam is broken and the second stops the timer when the beam is broken, then the time for a vehicle to travel between one beam and the other will be recorded.
  4. A straight line from the origin drawn with a ruler. Any gradient (other than vertical or horizontal) is acceptable.
  5. a) A steeper straight line than 4.
  6. b) A less steep straight line than 4.

Acceleration

  1. A car is accelerating if it is increasing in speed.
  2. Increasing the pulling force increases the acceleration.

Gravity and Falling

  1. The mass of a diver does not affect how fast the diver falls.
  2. A larger object falls more slowly because there is more air resistance.
  3. It accelerates at 10 metres per second per second (10m/s/s).
