Programme 17: Atomic Structure Curriculum Relevance
National Curriculum England and Wales Science Sc3 Materials and Their Properties Key Stage 4 Classifying materials 1. Pupils should be taught: Atomic structure a. that atoms consist of nuclei and electrons b. the charges and relative masses of protons, neutrons and electrons c. about atomic number and mass number d. about a model of how electrons are arranged in atoms e. how the reactions of elements depend on the arrangement of electrons in their atoms Patterns of behaviour 3. Pupils should be taught: The periodic table b. that the periodic table shows all the elements, arranged in order of ascending atomic number c. the connection between the arrangement of outer electrons and the position of an element in the periodic table d. that elements in the same group have similar properties e. how the properties of elements gradually change from the top to the bottom of the group Scotland Mainly Standard Grade but parts of it could be used for Intermediate 2 and some sections out of the Higher Course. Northern Ireland Curriculum Key Stage 4 Science (Double) Materials and Their Uses Properties and Uses Classification i. understand simple trends in the properties of elements within groups and across periods of the periodic table Science (Single) Materials and Their Uses m. be introduced to the Periodic Table and use it to investigate the physical and chemical properties of elements in terms of their position in the period table o. understand simple trends in the properties of elements within groups and across periods of the Periodic Table. Electronic Structure and Chemical Formulae k. learn about the structure of atoms in terms of electrons, protons and neutrons, in order to understand the structure of the first twenty elements of the Periodic Table l. learn about the formation of ions in terms of the addition or removal of electrons, and to work out the formula of simple ionic compounds.
