Programme 5: Stage and Screen

After Viewing

Rewind the programme to specific points and ask students to:

  • listen to the sections of 'Heart of the Wood' which feature the main theme (11.10, 12.00, 13.00 and 16.55). Through discussion, make a list of the similarities and differences in terms of the ‘fills’ between the main melodic lines, instrumentation, use of other countermelodies, dynamics, texture and structural devices (e.g. imitation).
  • View clips of the 'Mediaeval March' with the sound turned down (00.40, 01.00, 01.40, 04.24 and 08.25) then with the sound up and the picture masked. Discuss how the picture and music relate to each other. For example: What does the music add that is not apparent when viewing the picture without sound? Does the music make sense when heard in isolation? In what way does the music follow the action of the film?.
