After Viewing

Rewind the programme to specific points and ask the children to:

  • compare the phrase structure of the vocal line in 'Feeling Irie' 01.07 and the verse of 'Would you be Happier’ 09.42. Discuss the similarities and differences. For example, both have a repetitive phrase structure, but in 'Would you be Happier’ the melody is less rigidly repeated due to lyrical changes of rhythm and slight pitch changes at the end of melodic phrases.
  • discuss how the accompaniment relates to the lyrical content. For example, does the mood of the sounds and rhythms reflect the meaning of the lyrics?

Listen to a complete performance of ‘Feeling Irie’. Discuss:

  • How is contrast achieved through instrumentation and texture? Consider the concepts of adding and subtraction. Create a graphic score to show the different sections and when instruments drop in and out
  • Why are some of the sections shortened?

Listen to a complete performance of 'Would you be Happier’. Discuss:

  • What is the function of the links and the middle 8 in the overall structure of the music?
  • Why is the verse is repeated at the beginning? Why is it omitted at the end and replaced by the middle 8? (For example, to prevent monotony. The middle 8 helps to create a bigger impact for the final chorus).
