Enlargement

Programme Outline

Camera trickery produces some strange transformations of presenters Jamie and Katie, but for a mathematical enlargement the new shape must be similar to the original. Katie takes a photo of Jamie and has it blown up larger than life to explore different scale factors.

Katie views a massive advertisement for the Harry Potter film. It covers the side of an office block, but what scale factor was used to create this image? Katie interviews the creator and works with the dimensions of his original artwork to find out.

Jamie and Katie demonstrate how to work out an enlargement on a grid using lines from the centre of enlargement.

A mini version of a Mini car gives an example of an enlargement with a scale factor between 0 and 1.

Katie and Jamie demonstrate an enlargement of scale factor 3 on a grid, and we see a graphic demonstration of the effect of moving the centre of enlargement.

In this week's 'Tick or Trash', the presenters have to describe an enlargement. They both get the scale factor sorted but problems arise with finding the centre of enlargement.
