John Fashanu

John Fashanu presented the television programme Gladiators in the UK between 1992 and 1996, returning to the show in 1999.

Born in 1962, John first rose to stardom as a footballer. The former Barnado's boy was signed as an apprentice to Norwich City and soon became their youngest ever team player. In 1984 he was the most expensive player, commanding a transfer of £55,000 to Milwall. But his most famous period was as a Wimbledon player, where he became one of the most successful players in English football.

John Fashanu’s work against apartheid in South Africa earned him a citation from the President of the United Nations in 1987. In 1991, he set up a soccer school for homeless children in Johannesburg, South Africa, and in 1994, worked in both South Africa and the UK as a UNICEF Special Representative. (In 1999 John was then made UNICEF International Spokesperson.) In 1996 and again in 1998, John embarked upon an AIDS awareness campaign in which he toured Africa.
