Discrimination | Treating a group of people differently from others because they are members of that group. |
Prejudice | Prejudging someone or something. Having a fixed attitude about individuals or groups before having enough information. |
Xenophobia | Prejudiced dislike of foreign people and foreign culture. |
Stereotype | An exaggerated/ standardized description of a group of people suggesting that all members of that group are the same. |
Disability | Loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the normal life of the community on an equal level with other people. |
Impairment | Reduction of physical, sensory or mental function. |
Equal Opportunities | Trying to ensure that we reduce the effects of discrimination, prejudice and stereotyping. |
Slave trade | Capturing, transporting and selling people (usually black people from Africa). British people were active in this trade in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Some other countries were also involved. |
Abolitionist | A person who campaigned to stop slavery by law. |
Inclusion | Ensuring that everyone can take part in an activity. |
Accessible | Designed to be used by a wide variety of people. |
