Fairness Programme Outline
Section 1 John Fashanu introduces the programme by referring to universal human rights. Five categories are mentioned: - Fairness
- Free speech
- Democracy
- Essential Services
- Justice
These apply regardless of race, gender, disability, cultural or social background. Section 2 A five-minute drama shows a group of teenagers waiting for their friends at an ice skating rink. Members of the group display a variety of typical responses when, unexpectedly, a wheelchair-using cousin turns up to join them. Will this spoil their planned evening? Attitudes and prejudices about disability are explored. Section 3 John Fashanu then narrates a historical explanation of the significance of the slave trade to the development of wealth in British cities. The white people who profited from slavery developed attitudes towards black people that allowed them to continue the barbarous trade whilst considering themselves philanthropic in their own cities. The achievements of Olaudah Equiano the black abolitionist are summarised. Section 4 The documentary section comprises interviews with several young people involved in a multi-ethnic football team in an area of London where racism and violence are prevalent. Attitudes towards racism and violence are explored including peer pressure, group membership and lack of knowledge of other cultures. The benefits of the football team are apparent. Section 5 John Fashanu closes the programme by stating that resolution of conflicts is needed to ensure fairness for all.
