Information about currency exchange rates is readily available. Students can generate questions involving conversion of money for holiday spending. This is a context frequently used in examinations. Students could estimate how much spending money they would need for a week’s holiday, or work out roughly what they would expect to pay for a particular item in different countries.

Students could be encouraged to develop mental methods for making approximate conversions when shopping. In countries that use the Euro, for example, items are priced in two currencies.

See the ‘Links’ section for some online currency converters.

Students could investigate the quantities of ingredients used to make record-breaking sausages, curries, pies, kebabs and so on. The Guinness Book of Records has a section on ‘big food’.
