Activity 1: Group discussionTime: 1 hour Resources: - TV and video player

1. Explain the objectives of the lesson (see Aims). 2. Watch a recording of the whole programme (25 mins). 3. Organise the class into groups. Choose a leader for each group. 4. Set up group discussions depending on the time available: - Ask groups to discuss all the questions and record their views on the Tasksheet.
- Allocate 2-3 linked questions to each group and ask them to record their views.
5. Give pupils the Background Information page from the Net Notes to use to discover which of the young people in the programme is working illegally (optional). 6. Take feedback from the groups. Activity 2: Writing assignmentTime: 1 hour Resources: - TV and video player

1. Explain the objectives of the lesson (see Aims). 2. Watch excerpts from the programme about one of the characters (approx. 5 mins) for example, Carl Fitzpatrick. Later in the programme Carl, on his bed, says, 'Ive worked nearly three hours this morning, Ive earned four pound, Ive been to school, done football, Im shattered and Im ready for bed'. 3. The local newsagent has offered a good friend who is the same age as you, an evening and a Sunday paper round. He or she must accept both or neither and has asked your advice about what to do. Write a letter or compose an e-mail to your friend to help him or her decide what to do. Use the Background Information from Net Notes to help with this advice. 4. Ask one or two pupils to share their writing. Discuss any tensions they highlight between part-time work and school work. Activity 3: Research assignmentResources: - TV and video player

1. Explain the objectives of the lesson (see Aims). 2. Watch a recording of the whole programme (25 mins). 3. In groups or individually, ask pupils to: - Choose one of the jobs shown in the programme and find out more about what it takes to do it, using print-outs from an occupational database in the Careers Library, e.g. Kudos, CID, Explorer, and/or advertisements from the local newspaper.
- Record their findings on the Tasksheet.
4. Share and discuss their findings.
