. . . Not without the voice
Of mountain echoes did my boat move on,
Leaving behind her still on either side
Small circles glittering idly in the moon . . .

. . . The antique walls
Of a large abbey, with its fractured arch,
Belfry, and images, and living trees –
A holy scene.

 

At day-break on a hill they stood
That overlook's the Moor;
And thence they saw the Bridge of Wood
A furlong from their door.

 

They follow'd from the snowy bank
The footmarks, one by one,
Into the middle of the plank,
And further there were none.

 

Such seemed this Man, not all alive nor dead,
Nor all asleep - in this extreme old age:
His body was bent double, feet and head
Coming together in life's pilgrimage.
