of these sites and does not necessarily endorse the material on
them.
There is a no shortage of material on the Internet relating to
Nelson Mandela. However, their use needs careful consideration in
terms of:
- the depth of information they contain
- the range of insights published in them
- the ability to communicate with experts and enthusiasts
- the ability to access original archive material
- the potential to use the sites as the basis of really
stimulating and imaginative activities
The following sites are recommended because they meet at least
some of the criteria listed above.
The Mandela Page
http://www.anc.org.za/people/mandela/
This is the official Mandela home page, part of the ANC web
pages. It is a gateway site to a huge range of really helpful and
accessible resources on Mandela. There is even a link to send
emails to Mandela himself!
Biography of Nelson Mandela
>http://www.anc.org.za/people/mandela.html
This is a biography site, part of the ANC’s web page. It
is packed with useful details about Mandela’s life and
career, perfect for students who might want to construct a profile
of Mandela.
The Long Walk to Freedom
>http://www.obs-us.com/obs/english/books/Mandela/Mandela.html
This site contains some lengthy extracts from Mandela’s
autobiography, The Long Walk To Freedom. It is a fascinating
insight into the man, with many deeply powerful and moving
sections.
ANC Historical Documents
http://www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/history/
This is an extremely useful database of key documents relating
to the campaigns of the ANC against apartheid. It is easily
searched and accessible to most students.
The Unofficial Winnie Mandela Page
http://www.zip.com.au/~rocket/winnie.htm
This is a very hard hitting site which needs viewing
before deciding on its suitability for students. It is an attack on
the record of Nelson’s wife Winnie. However, it is also an
attack on the new South Africa, suggesting that it is little better
than the old. It is the closest thing to an attack on Mandela which
any searcher is likely to find.
