Zen and the Art of Cycle Design
Background Information
This programme contrasts two different design approaches,
brought about by different initial briefs. One approach is driven
by the bike's ultimate performance, the other is driven by the need
to produce a 'lifestyle' product with a look that will make it
stand out in a crowd.
The programme also brings up the question of why and how the
image of cycling has changed. It is probably as a result of the
success of marketing departments, a developing youth culture and
lifestyle or technological developments, or a combination of all of
these factors. A useful reference regarding the mechanical and
structural elements of the programme is 'Technology in Practice' by
TEP (John Cave) published by John Murray (ISBN 0719571790).
