Programme 4: Classical Introduction
In this programme, the term classical tradition is defined in both European and Indian music cultures. Both artists share the same rigour in composing along strictly defined rules and structures, but one is a written tradition, the other an aural one. 1. Prinicipia by Steve Martland. It is influenced by the sound world of rock and minimalist music and as the title suggests is constructed from a set of strictly defined principles. 2. Indian Dreams by Wajahat Khan is for sarod and string quartet. In order for the classically trained Medici Quartet to interpret the composers intentions, the piece involved a merging of Indian Classical music and Western approaches to notation.
