Programme 3: Primary Philosophy

Aims

This programme has a slightly different focus from the two preceding programmes. It looks at some of the underlying methodologies essential to good citizenship work - in secondary schools as well as primary - but also provides a closer look at some of the ways in which primary schools are laying effective foundations in citizenship for secondary colleagues to build on. For this reason we recommend that as far as possible the programme should be used in secondary schools as well as primaries.

The programme addresses the following issues:

• how pupils can be encouraged to take responsibility for their own and others' behaviour
• the relationship between citizenship education and conflict resolution and mediation
• the best ways to encourage high-quality discussion of citizenship issues
