In the Secondary Stages (2000), the curriculum design identifies the following abilities as goals for pupils:

• taking increasing responsibility for their own lives
• looking after their own personal needs, health and safety
• being sensitive and responsive to the needs of others
• making decisions based on informed judgements
• dealing responsibly with their emotions
