Aims

  • To provide an overview of the human immune system
  • To describe the body’s immune response to infection
  • To explain the difference between active and passive immunity
  • To illustrate the inflammatory response and to explain its usefulness
  • To show the structure and activity of white blood cells in response to infection by pathogens. For example, chickenpox in a small child
  • To consider the role of antigens, antibodies, and antitoxins
  • To look at some common allergies and how they can be prevented and treated
  • The effects of immune system failure are introduced through a case study of HIV infection.
