Black Holes, Dark Matter Aims
- To introduce the concept of 'dark matter', the invisible nine-tenths of the Universe, and to show why it may be largely responsible for the development and structure of the Universe.
- To show how the effects of the gravity of dark matter betray its existence even though it cannot be seen.
- To present evidence for the existence of dark matter in the Milky Way and in other galaxies.
- To explain the principle of gravitational lensing.
- To introduce black holes, both stellar-mass ones and supermassive ones, and to show how they form, how they can be detected, and their distorting effects on the surrounding space.
