Big Bang, Big Crunch

Aims

  • To examine the questions of how the Universe began, how it has evolved with time, and how it might end.
  • To introduce the Big Bang theory, the best current model for the origin of the Universe.
  • To briefly outline, step by step, the stages in the evolution of the Universe from the Big Bang to the present day.
  • To introduce the cosmic microwave background radiation, the left-over heat of the Big Bang, and explain the role of the COBE spacecraft in detecting temperature fluctuations in this background.
  • To outline the evolution and interactions of galaxies and attempts to understand their origins.
  • To identify some of the problems in estimating the age of the Universe, and show how these can be resolved.
