Infinity

Aims

  • To describe the position of our own Milky Way galaxy within the Universe.
  • To provide a description of certain galaxies, including the Milky Way's immediate neighbours and those more distant, and galaxy clusters and superclusters.
  • To present methods of mapping and measuring the Universe, particularly the use of so-called 'standard candles' such as Cepheid variables and Type I supernovae.
  • To introduce the concept of redshift, and the discovery by Edwin Hubble of the expansion of the Universe.
  • To describe some major steps in our understanding of galaxies, including radio galaxies, Seyfert galaxies and the superluminous quasars. All three types are believed to be fuelled by supermassive black holes.
