Hubble's Eye Aims
- To explain some of the techniques used in the design and construction of large modern astronomical telescopes, and how they gather light and bring it to a focus.
- To introduce some of the best terrestrial telescopes, and demonstrate that they need to be perched high above the clouds on remote mountaintops to obtain the best views of the cosmos.
- To explain the advantages of observing from space.
- To outline the design, construction and capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the problem with the primary mirror, and how this was brilliantly solved using corrective optics.
- To show a few of the many complex tasks performed by the spacewalking astronauts during the first Hubble Servicing Mission in December 1993.
- To show some of the spectacular pictures received from the HST following its dramatic repair in space, and its scientific achievements to date.
- To show the improvement in our knowledge of the cosmos thanks to the HST.
