Impact!

Aims

  • To present the asteroid belt, a region of small, generally rocky bodies that orbit the Sun mainly between Mars and Jupiter.
  • To introduce the concept that Solar System bodies collide with one another from time to time, and to give various examples of such cosmic impacts, including meteorite falls.
  • To show how robot spacecraft are being used to tell us more about the nature of asteroids and comets.
  • To give some examples of how the consequences of cosmic impacts on Earth might be avoided.
