Eclipses and Aurorae

Aims

  • To introduce the solar wind, the stream of charged particles continually emitted by the Sun, and show how it is mostly deflected by the Earth's magnetosphere.
  • To demonstrate how massive eruptions on the Sun can trigger geomagnetic storms and beautiful displays of the aurora.
  • To explain the mechanisms which give rise to eclipses of the Moon and of the Sun, and the difference between partial, annular and total solar eclipses.
  • To convey some of the beauty and wonder of a total eclipse of the Sun.
