Aims

  • To recount the evolution of rocket science, from 'firework' rockets in ancient China to the first liquid-fuelled rockets and the eventual launch by the Soviet Union of the Sputnik 1 satellite into Earth orbit.
  • To describe the highs and lows experienced by both the Russians and the Americans during the early years of human spaceflight.
  • To portray key figures in the Russian and American space programmes.
  • To describe the race for the Moon, and the three programmes - Mercury, Gemini and Apollo - undertaken by the Americans to achieve this goal.
  • To briefly review the Apollo Moon landings, including the near-disaster of Apollo 13.
