Aims & Learning Outcomes

Pupils should gain an understanding of:

  • The physical and emotional changes that take place during adolescence;
  • The human reproductive system, including the menstrual cycle and fertilisation;
  • How the foetus develops in the uterus, including the role of the placenta.
  • How people develop and go through puberty at different rates;
  • The fact that the sex of a baby depends upon the father;
  • The fact that identical twins come from one egg, which divides and separates;
  • How non-identical twins are a result of two eggs being fertilised;
  • How barrier methods of contraception aim to prevent fertilisation;
  • The fact that humans are the only animal that tries to control fertilisation and pregnancy.
