Aims & Learning Outcomes

Pupils should gain an understanding of:

  • How lung structure enables gas exchange to take place;
  • How smoking affects lung structure and gas exchange;
  • That the abuse of alcohol, solvents and other drugs affects health.
  • The fact that a drug is a chemical that has an effect on the body;
  • How some drugs are designed to improve health, but some are harmful;
  • How lungs can be damaged by solvents, and nicotine in cigarette smoke;
  • The fact that drugs can change how you feel;
  • How many modern drugs have been developed from plant remedies that have been known for a long time.
