Aims & Learning Outcomes

Pupils should gain an understanding of:

  • The use of keys to identify animals and plants;
  • How living things can be classified into major taxonomic groups.
  • How groups of animals are classified by their different characteristics;
  • How skin type is a good indication of the type of vertebrate;
  • The facts that all vertebrates have a backbone, some mammals live in water, animals breathe in different ways and humans are in the same group of animals as seals;
  • How reptiles are different from amphibians.
