Limestone

Aims

Pupils should gain an understanding of:

  • The benefits and drawbacks of scientific and technological developments in environmental and other contexts;
  • Limestone as a very plentiful resource and the fact that it will not run out for a very long time;
  • How limestone can be broken down into other useful chemicals by heating (thermal decomposition);
  • The physical properties of limestone which make it useful as a building material and for sculpture;
  • Limestone being porous and this results in spectacular scenery in limestone areas;
  • Limestone and its products being useful in treating the effects of acid in the air and the soil;
  • Limestone as a sedimentary rock.
