War in Vietnam 1966 - 1969 Programme Outline
The programme traces the changing attitudes to bombing civilians as the war progressed. The German bombing of Coventry and other UK cities (the 'Blitz') resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths. The response was the bombing of Dresden and Hamburg, resulting in an estimated 500,000 deaths. By the end of the war the dropping of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which would have been unthinkable in 1940, had been legitimised.
