Refugee Voices

Aims

Pupils should gain an appreciation of the following key issues:

• The circumstances of fear, violence and abuse of human rights that make refugees leave home.
• The sense of loss that is a major part of the life of any refugee.
• The possible separation from family.
• The initial difficulties of communication that language barriers may cause, and the ensuing sense of isolation.
• The varying receptions given in Britain to refugees.
• The different hopes for the future held by refugees.
• The need for all citizens to empathise with refugees and to imagine for themselves what it would be like to have to leave home and find a new place to settle, find work and make relationships.
