Aims

As a result of watching the programmes, students will:

• know about and understand the contribution of women to the First and Second World Wars;

• describe and explain attitudes towards the role of women and to identify change and continuity in these attitudes between the First and Second World Wars;

• understand the range of ways in which women in the past have been represented and interpreted;

• appreciate how propaganda and patriotism influenced representations and interpretations of the role of women during the First and Second World Wars;

• use films about women and war critically in their historical context;

• appreciate the diversity of women's experiences during the First and Second World Wars, including the international dimension;

• understand the significance of the role of individual women in the twentieth century.
