Guidance

This programme is best shown in its entirety but if this is not possible then selected sections will need to be carefully chosen. Selection of these will depend on whether students are learning about the lance per se, or whether the programme could be used to illustrate the realities of battles. The final sections that cover the Battle of Bannockburn give a useful insight into the English-Scottish conflict in the 14th century.

General activities

Alongside the programme students could:

• Investigate what happened to the ‘parliament’ set up after De Montford’s success at Lewes
• Find out more about shiltrons
• Make a list of all the modern-day jobs that are connected to history
• Investigate in depth two modern-day jobs that involve history
• Find images of lances and compare them with what they have seen on this programme.

Programme-related activities

• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.
