Channel 4 Learning

Learning Programme Notes - PSHE

WASTED

SERIES AIMS

The series is particularly relevant to themes covered in Health and Wellbeing at the third and fourth levels and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education at Key Stages 3 and 4. It may also support aspects of Citizenship and cross-curricular dimensions such as Healthy Lifestyles.

As some programmes contain scenes of drug taking and strong language, the series may be more appropriate to students at Key Stage 4 / fourth level.

The UK has the highest levels of addiction and multi-drug use in Europe, and the second highest rate of drug-related deaths (UK Drug Policy Commission, 2007). A further study reports that one pupil in 25 in English secondary schools has used Class A drugs (Information Centre for Health & Social Care, 2005). This equates to around 128,000 11-15 year olds.

The series presents an opportunity for students to learn firsthand about the health consequences of drug use, to debate the legality of certain drugs, to consider issues around personal and social responsibility, and to challenge some of the myths surrounding drug use. It may also provide an opportunity for young people to think about keeping themselves safe and how to help others in an emergency.
