Learning Programme Notes - PSHE

WASTED

ACTIVITIES

Guidance

Before viewing, it is important for teachers to consider that some students may have experience of drug or alcohol misuse, either directly or through family and friends. Some of the content of Wasted may therefore be distressing. Agree a set of ground rules with particular emphasis on young people taking responsibility for what they share in discussion, and ensuring students know that it is not necessary to share personal experiences.

Activities for the Mum and Dad programme include looking into sources of support. It is suggested that, if not all of the programmes are to be viewed, this activity be included in any follow-up work done.

Note to teachers

The Key points for discussion refer to each of the programmes specifically. However, many of the suggested activities that follow can be adapted for use after any of the programmes, or at the end of the series.

The introductory and closing activities can be used before and after the series as a whole; before and after any individual programme (if not viewing the whole series); or before and after each of the programmes.

Introductory activity – before viewing

Ask students to use two pieces of paper headed 'fact' and 'question' to write down one thing they consider to be a fact about drugs (or, if using this activity before each programme, about the drug focused on), and one question they would like to ask (anonymously). Collect these in to be revisited at the end of the programme or series.

Closing activity – after viewing

Select facts and questions (collected in the Introductory activity above) to be read out to the students. Ask if they can correct or add to any of the facts, and if they can answer any of the questions.

If there are any appropriate questions that have not been answered during the course of the programme or series, ask students to research the answers.
