ACTIVITIES

Guidance

This programme will give a fascinating insight into modern world history and will help students to put the whole of the 20th century into context. For groups studying the Balkans, the section that covers events in Bosnia will be particularly useful.

General activities

Alongside the programme students could:

• Produce a modern-day map of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the surrounding countries, and plot on it places mentioned in this programme
• Find out more about the economic miracle in China
• Make a timeline of Margaret Thatcher's time as prime minister
• Compare a map of the old Soviet Union with a map showing modern-day Russia and eastern Europe
• Invite people to the classroom to give memories of any of the events mentioned in this programme
• Use old newspapers to find accounts of these events.

Programme-related activities

• This material can be adapted to suit the particular age and ability of the students
• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.
