ACTIVITIES

Guidance

This programme gives an excellent overview of the Cold War and the civil wars in the third world. It is best shown in its entirety rather than in sections as a common theme runs through it. However, the section describing the Cuban Missile Crisis could be used in isolation if this is of most curriculum relevance.

General activities

Alongside the programme students could:

• Produce a map of the world that shows the events and conflicts featured in this programme
• Interview older people about their memories and perceptions of these events at the time and how they were covered in the media
• Find contrasting newspaper reports of these events and assess the reporting
• Undertake a web search for 'Henry Kissinger' and find out more about him
• Research the role of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot in more detail.

Programme-related activities

• This material can be adapted to suit the particular age and ability of the students
• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.
