ACTIVITIES

Guidance

This programme is best shown in conjunction with Programme 3, which covers the earlier part of the war. However, it should be noted that students will need a good basic grounding in the key events of the Second World War before watching these programmes.

General activities

Alongside the programme students could:

• Find out more about how America equipped the Soviets during the Second World War
• Produce a timeline of key events in the Second World War
• Research another key battle of the Second World War
• Search on the internet for German or Japanese accounts of the bombing raids on their cities
• Write a short article about the bombing of Hiroshima.

Programme-related activities

• This material can be adapted to suit the particular age and ability of the students
• The following tasks can be undertaken individually or in pairs
• Usually one copy of each worksheet is needed per student
• Encourage whole-class discussion and feedback after each activity.

Task 1: Germany versus Russia 1943
Students need to watch section 04.58 – 16.24.
